Blocked card for paying early

Moved to Canada and transferred my account from UK to a platinum card. The website doesn't let you pay anything until your first month is billed. I got my statement and had 3 weeks to pay but immediately paid half of it as the balance was sitting high. AMEX then blocked by card for a week saying it was due to "unusual activity of high payment". So basically they blocked by card because I paid early... they said it was automated and there was no way to remove it.
