On August 29, 2024, my eBay account was hacked and my address was changed.eBay’s reaction to this was to send me an email suspecting suspicious activity. They did not flag my account, call or text, or send a letter. The email was never read, likely deleted. Sept 23rd and 24th I made 5 purchases totaling more than $118.Once the fraud was realized, eBay requires an online process to go to the seller (which wasn’t their fault- they sent the items to the hackers address on file). After the sellers deny culpability, eBay gets involved on the buyers behalf. eBay denied my claim for their Money-back guarantee, saying the items ordered were sent and received. They also denied my appeal. All done online because there’s no easy or direct way to call someone. After googling their customer service number (because it’s nowhere on their website) I spoke with an eBay rep Who verbally denied any ability to refund my money that I was out.To summarize, eBay’s lax Security allowed my account to be compromised; their response to which was an email to me. Subsequently, me, their customer spent 118+ dollars for items I never received. eBay has categorically refused to make me whole.Very gratefully, I had used my U.S. Bank card for these purchases. Although this fraud had nothing to do with my credit card company, they’ve refunded what I’m out and are going to pursue eBay based on contractual obligations the merchant agrees to by doing business with U.S. Bank that they must guarantee the product is received by the purchaser.Knowing that made my day. It’s the principal, not the money.UPDATE 10/17: I closed my Ebay account obviously, the day I posted this complaint, and found that process also contains problems while you wait for them to verify your closing them off. eBay failed me, and I’ve never been held hostage by ANY merchant I’ve done business with until now. I’m mortified by their policies; as I’ve never had a problem previously, like most people, I’m clear they don’t deal with ANY problems appropriately (see negative reviews about what happens when something goes wrong). Proof in the pudding. eBay has become PayPal. Untrustworthy, Un-secure, unhelpful.
