Laptop Trash & Customer Service Sneaky

I recently ran across a friends 2 year old Lenovo Ideapad from Best Buy that was running low on memory. Not sure why anyone would make or sell a laptop with 32 Gb of memory but that's what it had and it was running low on memory with literally nothing but Windows 10 installed! It wouldn't update because it was low on memory! I called Lenovo and they gave me two options to correct the problem. Both cost $200. I then asked what is the least cost option? They said $69 but it would erase everything on the computer. Of course that's exactly what I wanted but I had to drag it out of them! Tech spent an hour working on the laptop trying to get it to reboot but failed due to the lack of memory. They then sent me a reboot drive in the mail. I called them when I received it and they walked me through the reboot process (which is apparently a big secret since it wasn't written down anywhere). I was able to update Windows after it loaded which brought it back to a low memory condition only this time it gave me the option of deleting the previous version of Windows which I did and then it seemed fine. Still don't know why Lenovo would make this or Best Buy would sell this to a consumer even 2 years ago.
